Though well-equipped under the assistance of the former Soviet Union, the Vietnamese air force has lost its sponsor and is beginning a slow slide into decline due to the unwillingness of other world powers to sell aircraft and equipment to it. Its 15,000 man air force has 365 Soviet-designed combat aircraft, mainly tasked to air-defense duties.
